### **Influencers Don't Build Trust. Local Shop Owners Do.**

You can spend months looking for the right influencer and still not earn a repeat customer. Trust does not come from reach. It comes from someone your customer already believes. Kate Assaraf found that out while building Dip, and she shows how in this conversation.

Kate Assaraf is the founder and CEO of Dip, a plastic-free hair care brand that grew to seven figures without Amazon or paid ads. In this conversation, Kate shares the brand mistakes she sees most often, from half-truth marketing to fast-buy websites. She explains how honest marketing builds trust, and why small refill shops carry that message better than ads can. She talks about packaging, from plastic-free bars to shipping boxes sized so no air gets shipped. She also tells how her contract manufacturer going bankrupt led her to build her own factory and protect her formulas. This episode is for small business owners and product founders who want to grow on trust, not tricks.

Small brands lose customer trust when their marketing hides half the story. Kate Assaraf, founder and CEO of Dip, built a seven-figure plastic-free hair care brand by selling through independent refill shops. Her approach shows owners how honest marketing, retail partnerships, and clear product choices earn repeat customers without relying on Amazon or influencers.

---

**Who this is for:** SMB owners, solopreneurs, corporate escapees, and leaders building retail or manufacturing systems.

---

### **Key Lessons**

**1\. Trust travels through people, not posts.** Kate says sustainable influencers will hawk every shampoo bar, and she doesn't care for that. She cares about shop owners who explain the product in person. She calls refill stores the new record stores: you name one thing you like, and the person behind the counter points you to the next.

**2\. Honest marketing treats customers like adults.** Kate defines greenwashing as lying or telling half-truths. She says it's the laziest way to sell. At Dip, she explains why she chose one ingredient over another, and she trusts the customer to decide. She says you can only dupe someone once or twice on sustainability before they're done.

**3\. Protect what you built.** Kate's contract manufacturer went bankrupt a year or so in. She knew some manufacturers keep most of a formula and reuse the rest for other clients. So she built her own factory. That also lets her ship with care, with about 48 box sizes so nothing ships with air.

### **Practical Steps**

- **Find your trusted voices.** List the people who already talk to your customers in person. Pick one this week and ask what they need from you.
- **Rewrite one claim in plain words.** Pick one product claim and say why you chose that ingredient or material. Share the reason, not just the label.
- **Check your website for careful buyers.** Kate says sustainable shoppers want more than a quick buy button. Look for ingredients, sourcing, and what a purchase supports.

### **FAQ**

**What is greenwashing?**
Greenwashing means telling half-truths to get someone to buy. Kate calls it the laziest marketing and suggests explaining each ingredient choice instead.

**Why sell through small independent shops?**
Shop owners vet every product, know their customers, and explain features and benefits in person. Kate says they are the real influencers in her space.

**How can a small brand protect its formulas?**
Kate's contract manufacturer went bankrupt, and she learned some makers reuse most of a formula for other clients. She now runs her own factory to keep hers private.
