Most care businesses don't fail because the care is poor.
They fail because the owner is doing everything alone — and no one ever told them a different way was possible.
Iain Clague spent 35 years in the care sector watching that pattern repeat. Then he built The Care Connector Network to interrupt it. In this episode of Knack 4 Business, he breaks down what isolation really costs, how collaboration changes the model, and what burnout taught him about building community the right way.

Key Lessons
1. The silo is the problem — not the sector
In the UK, 87% of care businesses operate with a single registered service. No back-office. No peer network. Just one person running every department. Iain's argument is that the answers already exist inside the sector — they're just locked in rooms that don't talk to each other. Providers and suppliers want the same outcome. They just speak different languages and treat each other as competition instead of collaborators.
2. Burnout is a systems failure, not a personal one
Iain burnt out. Six weeks in bed. He had been giving constantly without structure to sustain it. The recovery wasn't about working less — it was about building a community that could carry some of the weight. He brought in mentors, started using AI as a genuine business director rather than a motivational tool, and restructured his network so it didn't depend entirely on him. If you're the only load-bearing wall in your business, the building is one bad season from falling.
3. The referral model starts with their business, not yours
Iain teaches one thing before anything else: learn someone else's business before you talk about your own. After a conversation about what you do, ask what else is going on in their business right now. That question creates introduction opportunities you couldn't manufacture. The person who makes those introductions becomes the person everyone wants in their network. It's not a sales tactic — it's the entire model.
Practical Steps
Three things you can do this week:
- Map your referral gaps. Write down the five most common problems your clients mention that you can't solve yourself. Then identify one person in your network who can solve each one. That list is your collaboration starting point.
- Change one question in your next business conversation. After you've covered what you do, ask: "What else is going on in your business right now?" Notice what opens up.
- Audit your load. List every hat you wear in your business. Circle the ones that a community, a mentor, or a tool could carry instead. — WebIndexer is worth looking at if your website is one of the things answering questions it shouldn't need you for. —

FAQ
Q: Does The Care Connector Network model only work in the UK care sector?
No. Iain addresses this directly. The core model — providers and suppliers learning each other's businesses and making introductions — applies to any service sector where people work in silos and treat competitors as threats.
Q: How do you build a referral community without it becoming just another networking group?
Iain's answer: shift the first question. Instead of leading with what you do, ask what's going on in the other person's business. That creates introduction opportunities that aren't about you — and that's what makes the referral real.
Q: What does AI actually add to a small business operator's toolkit?
Iain uses it as a business mentor and director — not a cheerleader. The key is prompting it to push back, not validate. Tell it to act as a business partner who will say no. That changes the quality of what comes back.
