Google doesn't rank websites for how much they publish. It ranks them for trust ~ built through quality backlinks and content people actually want to read. Brandon Leibowitz, founder of SEO Optimizers, explains why a handful of strong backlinks beats a pile of weak ones, and shows SMB owners how to grow organic traffic without wasting a marketing budget on volume alone.

KEY LESSONS
1. Backlinks are votes of confidence ~ but only from the right sites. A backlink from a site related to your business, and with some authority, moves you up the rankings. A backlink from an unrelated site in another country can actually hurt you. Brandon's seen local remodeling companies rank oddly because of backlinks from sites in India and the UK ~ Google gets confused about where the business actually operates.
2. Quality beats quantity ~ everywhere, not just backlinks. Ten mediocre blog posts a month is worse than three excellent ones. Brandon points to Google's own algorithm updates: they consistently reward depth over volume, and punish businesses trying to game the system with low-effort content.
3. Paid ads work ~ until you stop paying. Brandon's rule of thumb: keep running ads as long as they're profitable, but never rely on them alone. Remarketing ~ the ads that follow you after you've visited a site ~ is the one paid strategy he recommends to everyone, because it's cheap and it's warm traffic.
PRACTICAL STEPS
- Audit your last 10 pieces of content. Cut the weakest half and rewrite the rest properly.
- Check Google Analytics (or Microsoft Clarity, which is free) to see where your traffic actually comes from before spending more on any one platform.
- If you've been a guest on a podcast, make sure you have a dedicated landing page with your offer ~ not just a list of social handles nobody will remember.

FAQ
Is it better to have a few strong backlinks or a lot of weak ones?
A few strong, relevant backlinks. Google trusts quality over volume, and low-quality backlinks can actually hurt your rankings.
How long does SEO take to show results?
It depends on your website's age and how competitive your keywords are ~ anywhere from one month to over a year, according to Brandon.
Are paid ads worth it for a small business?
Yes, as long as you're making more than you spend. But don't rely on them alone ~ once you stop paying, the traffic disappears.
