ANSWER CAPSULE

Many experienced leaders feel stuck not because they've failed but because they've outgrown their current season. Paula Washington is a business and leadership strategist who helps mid-life professionals move forward with intention using her ENCORE framework. This episode gives leaders a clear, practical roadmap for building their next chapter on their own terms.

WHO THIS IS FOR

SMB owners / Solopreneurs / Corporate escapees / Leaders building systems — especially those at a crossroads between what they've built and what comes next.

Key Lessons

1. Discomfort is a signal, not a failure.

Every decade you grow into a new version of yourself. What worked in the last season won't automatically carry into the next one. Paula puts it simply: when you feel uncomfortable where you are, that's not something going wrong. That's your cue to move. The leaders who struggle most are the ones who wait for the discomfort to go away instead of using it as a starting point.

2. Exit with intention — before you leave.

Whether you're stepping out of corporate, selling a business, or shifting your focus entirely, the ENCORE framework starts with the letter E for a reason. You don't just leave. You build a plan before you go. Paula walked through a client who had four CEOs reporting to him and had completely lost sight of his own why — not because he wasn't capable, but because he'd never built an exit from the day-to-day that let him see from the top again. One conversation and a set of focused questions got him back on track.

3. Bet on yourself. That's the one guarantee.

Paula said it plainly: if you bet on yourself, you will always win. You may not know the exact outcome, but the act of committing — really committing — is what builds momentum, attracts opportunity, and grows confidence. She shared her own story of being downsized from corporate and walking into the SBA with a program in her briefcase. She came to get a loan. She left with a contract. That's what showing up ready looks like.

Practical Steps

1. Map your ENCORE.
Take one hour this week and write down where you are against each letter of the framework — Exit, Navigate, Commit, Communicate, Opportunity, Relevant, Excellence. You don't need to have answers. You need to know which letter is your sticking point. That's where the real work starts.

2. Ask the three questions Paula uses with every new client.
What do you want? What are you afraid of? In your ideal world today, without any barriers — what would you do? Most people have never answered all three honestly. Do it in writing. The pattern that shows up is usually the direction.

3. Find one opportunity already in front of you and act on it this week.
Paula's point on opportunity is direct: they are around you all the time. If you can't see them, create them. And when you do see one — don't sit on it. The best thing that can happen is you experience something you never thought possible.

FAQ

Q: What is the ENCORE framework?
It's a seven-step leadership transition model developed by Paula Washington. Each letter stands for a stage: Exit with intention, Navigate the chaos, Commit, Communicate authentically, find Opportunity, stay Relevant, and pursue Excellence. It's designed for mid-life professionals who are ready to build their next chapter on purpose.

Q: Who is the ENCORE framework for?
It's built for mid-life professionals — executives, founders, and leaders in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who are navigating a transition. That could mean leaving corporate, selling or transferring a business, or simply stepping into a new season with more intention than the last one.

Q: How do I know if I'm ready to work with Paula?
Paula says there are three types of ready. Some people have already made the move and need a strategy to follow through. Some people can see the gap but need a plan to cross it. And some people just want to go — they need someone to help them build the runway. All three are welcome.
