Weight management often fails because people put their own health last. Susan McGarry, a Canadian health consultant and wellness educator with 25 years of experience, explains why processed food and sugar work against you. She shares simple grocery, meal prep, and daily movement habits busy Canadians can start this week.

Who this is for

Busy adults, solopreneurs, and SMB owners who keep putting their own health last.

Key Lessons

1. Put yourself back on the list. Susan says she became "number two" while work and parenting came first. In her thirties, the weight kept building. She asked what she used to do in her twenties, when she planned meals and paid attention to food. She brought those habits back. Small changes gave her more energy, better mobility, and more confidence.

2. Start at the grocery store. Susan's first move is simple. Shop the outside aisles for fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and whole grains. She says processed food and sugar feed inflammation. She even points to ketchup, which she says now carries about as much sugar as soda. Her view of Mediterranean food is plain: it is food, not a diet.

3. Plan for the hangry moment. Busy days are where plans break. Susan cooks a batch of salmon on Sunday and freezes it. She keeps boiled eggs, carrots, and celery ready. When fast food is the only option, she skips the fries and asks for a side salad.

Practical Steps

  • Shop the outside aisles this week. Fill the cart with fruits, vegetables, fish, and chicken first. Skip the long pop and chip aisles.
  • Prep one batch on Sunday. Cook a protein, portion it, and keep a dozen boiled eggs and cut carrots in the fridge.
  • Move ten minutes a day. Stretch or take a short walk. Susan uses a step counter to stay accountable.

Not medical advice. Check with your doctor before changing food, medication, or supplements.

FAQ

Is the Mediterranean diet really a diet?
Susan says it should be called Mediterranean food. It leans on fish, chicken, fruits, and vegetables, with less red meat and little dairy. It stays away from processed food and sugar.

How fast should I change my eating habits?
Everyone is different. Some people go cold turkey on a Monday. Others change one thing at a time. Susan says the first place to start is the grocery store.

What can I do in ten minutes a day?
Get up and move. Stretch or take a short walk. Susan tracks her steps with a watch so she stays on target.
