Vanessa Burns — one of only six accredited Grant Professionals of Canada — explains why unclear messaging is the real reason grant applications fail, and how to build a smarter funding strategy
Hosts Percy Barr, Wayne Pratt and Bernie Franzgrote
Vanessa Burns reveals why grant applications fail and how brand clarity and smart strategy help small businesses and nonprofits get funded on Knack 4 Business.
GROWTH CATEGORY: Sales & Revenue
Most grant applications fail before the funder finishes the first paragraph. Not because the business isn't good enough. Because the message isn't clear enough. Vanessa Burns — one of only six accredited Grant Professionals of Canada — joined Knack 4 Business to change that.

KEY LESSONS
Clarity is the foundation of every funded application
Funders read fast. In some cases, they have 20 to 40 seconds to assess whether your application is worth their attention. If your first 250 words don't explain what you do, who you help, and what problem you solve — you're already behind. Vanessa recommends testing your pitch on someone outside your industry. If they're confused, a funder will be too.
Not every grant is the right grant
Applying for everything wastes time and produces nothing. Vanessa's three-point filter asks: Does this grant support your sector? Your community? Your business profile? If any of those is a no, skip it. Grants for businesses are built around growth — hiring, exporting, building, researching. Grants for nonprofits are built around impact. Know which lane you're in before you apply.
Grants are a marathon, not a sprint
Vanessa has been rejected four times in a single day. She still applied the next day. The businesses that get funded are the ones that treat grants as a long-term strategy — building a calendar, tracking opportunities before they close, and assessing the ROI of every application before writing a single word. Free money always comes with strings. Make sure you have the capacity to deliver what you promise.
PRACTICAL STEPS
- Refine your elevator pitch. Get your message down to 250 words or fewer. Test it on someone outside your industry. If they don't get it immediately, rewrite it.
- Audit your digital presence. Check your website, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. If the messaging isn't consistent across all platforms, fix that before you apply for anything.
- Build a grant calendar. Start tracking opportunities now — even ones that just closed. Use tools like Grant Connect, Grant Advance, Grant Station, or TD Bank's free grant search to build your library. Assign someone to own it.

FAQ
Q: Do I need to hire a grant writer to apply for grants? Not necessarily. Vanessa teaches that clarity and alignment matter more than polished writing. If you can explain what you do, who you help, and what problem you solve in plain language — you already have the foundation. A grant professional helps you apply that strategically.
Q: How do I know if a grant is worth applying for? Use Vanessa's three-point filter. Does it support your sector, your community, and your business profile? Also weigh the ROI. If the application requires 40 hours of work for a $5,000 grant, it may not be the best use of your time. Read the applicant guide first — every word of it.
Q: What's the most common reason grant applications get rejected? Unclear messaging. Funders can't fund what they can't understand. If your application doesn't quickly explain what you do, what problem you solve, and how you'll use the money — you're already at a disadvantage. Brand clarity and grant success are directly connected.
